Parenting in Practice

Messy moments, real life, and parenting neurodivergent kids

A podcast for parents raising neurodivergent kids, from a psychologist living it too.

Listen now on:

I’m Emma Richards, a psychologist and a mum of three neurodivergent kids. Parenting in Practice is where I think out loud about the real moments of family life… the mornings, the transitions, the bedtime wobbles, and everything in between.

It’s for the moments when you’re standing in the kitchen with too many tabs open in your brain, trying to work out what might actually help your child, in your family, today.

What to expect

Short episodes exploring the everyday realities of raising neurodivergent kids. Sometimes they’re built around stories from my own family. Sometimes they’re sparked by conversations I’ve had in my work. I try to be really thoughtful about the topics I choose, because some of them deserve a closer look than they usually get.

Every family is different. If something resonates, I hope it gives you a useful starting point for thinking about your own child and family.

Season One: Parenting Advice You Can't Google (releasing now)

It started with a bath plug. Well… a trip to the hardware shop for a new one that ended up changing far more than our bath.

You won’t find that advice in any parenting book. No one is going to write: “If your neurodivergent child is struggling with transitions, you should buy a bath plug.” But when you’re parenting neurodivergent kids, that’s often what it actually comes down to.

Across six episodes (a bath plug, a bedtime audiobook, a routine chart, afternoon tea, even a hole in a hallway wall), season one looks at why generic parenting advice so often doesn’t land for our neurodivergent kids… and what support can look like instead.
